My Weekly Report & Reflection 11-12

Image
In learning about teaching mathematics at the junior intermediate level this term, I have made numerous connections to material taught in other courses. For instance, as educators today, we are taught how to teach 21 st century learners. In learning how to teach the students of our future, we as educators must master the art of engagement. In all lessons, it is our job to try our best to engage our students in the material we are teaching them. Group Collaboration: As well, we should make the switch to allow students the freedom to explore material on their own in groups, to collaborate to find the answers. Personally, Within the math course, we were given a lot of mathematical problems to solve as a group, and with collaboration among my peers, I was able to make sense of more of the tasks to be done. This class not only taught me how to teach math, but how to allow for group discussion, exploration and freedom within a classroom setting.  St. Bernadette Example: I have s...

My Weekly Report & Reflection 8 - 9

Hello everyone! Thanks for visiting my mathematics for educator’s blog again! Through weeks 8 and 9 in mathematics class, I learned many valuable lessons that I can use in my future carer as a Junior/intermediate teacher. Furthermore, this week I will be explaining resources that I have used for units of mathematics involving geometry and spatial sense, as well as measurement. My mathematics class as well as myself explored and used resources that I would definitely implement within my future classroom.  Week 8: Geometry & Spatial Sense             Within the strand, geometry and spatial sense, in the mathematics curriculum, we focused on symmetry and line segments. For symmetry, we looked at geometric shapes, and drew the possible lines of symmetry on each shape, while rotating the shape 45 degrees to the right each time. An image of this is demonstrated below.   (Malatesta, 2018) I...

My Weekly Report & Reflection 6-7

Hello everyone! thanks for visiting my mathematics for educator’s blog again! Through weeks 6 and 7 in mathematics class, I learned many valuable lessons that I can use in my future carer as a Junior/intermediate teacher.  Furthermore, this week I will be explaining resources that I have used for units of mathematics involving ratios, as well as patterning and algebra. My mathematics class explored and used resources that I would definitely implement within my future classroom.  Week 6: Ratios             Ratios are an important unit in mathematics. This is true, as ratios are used every day within life. For instance, if you are shopping at the grocery store and want to see which product provides you with the best bang for your buck.  This is one of the ways I would teach ratios within my classroom. As I feel as if everyday exemplars of mathematics material make learning ratios an easier and more ...

My Weekly Report & Reflection 4-5

Thanks for visiting my mathematics for educator’s blog again! Through weeks 4 and 5 in mathematics class, I learned many valuable lessons that I can use in my future carer as a J/I teacher.  Thus, this week I will be explaining resources that I have just used to explore integers within the number sense and numeration strand in the mathematics curriculum. My group explored a couple things that I would most definitely implement within my classroom.  Firstly, a partner and myself played a mathematics game using integers (multiplication, division, subtraction as well as addition). This game was very engaging, and I think students from grades 5 to 7would benefit from playing this game, as while playing you don't necessarily think you are doing a math activity. Personally I am an individual who struggles and have always struggled with math, its something that just doesn’t come naturally to me. Yet, while playing this game, my partner and myself had a lot of fun, and it did no...

My Weekly Report and Reflection 1

Hello everyone! Through weeks 2-3 in mathematics class, I learned many valuable lessons that I can use in my future carer as a J/I teacher. For instance, using manipulatives, group work, and discussion when giving the class questions on course content aids in demonstrating the various methods of solving equations/problems.  During  week 2 , the class was given building blocks as a manipulative as well as paper and markers in order to solve a problem of: “There were 10 people in a group, all had to shake one another’s hands once. How many handshakes were there altogether?”(Khirwadkar, Week 2, 2018).    When my group (Math Magicians) first read this question we make a mistake at solving it. Yet, as mistakes are always areas of learning and improvement we quickly realized that: 10 people X 10 handshakes = 100 handshakes total was, in fact, incorrect and needed to be rethought. We then again read the question and using trees as seen below we figur...

Welcome!

Welcome everyone to my math blog! Within this blog, I will be posting my learning and activities conducted within EDBE 8P29. In learning how to read and understand the Ontario curriculum, I hope to attain ways in which I can use the curriculum and activities to make math fun. On this blog, I will be posting ways in which I can engage students in Mathematics, as it was a subject I wish I was more engaged in and wanted to do as a child. If you wish to engage your students in mathematics, be sure to come back weekly to see ways in which I have found to do so!
